A Legacy of Service: Supporting the Berrien County Jail Expansion and Modernization

At Mead & White Electric, some projects leave a lasting impression because of the impact they have on the communities we serve. The Berrien County Jail expansion in St. Joseph, Michigan is one of those projects.
In 1979, Mead & White Electric was proud to be part of the original construction team supporting the major expansion of the Berrien County Jail. Historical newspaper coverage from the groundbreaking ceremony captured the beginning of the long-awaited addition, and notably featured Harold White — one of Mead & White Electric’s original founders — pictured alongside project leaders and contractors at the site.
As part of the construction team, Mead & White Electric provided electrical expertise supporting the large multi-story addition and improvements to the existing facility. Participating in such an important civic project was a tremendous honor for our company and reflected the trust placed in Mead & White Electric throughout the region.
What makes this project especially meaningful is that our relationship with the facility continued decades later.
From 2017 through 2021, Mead & White Electric once again had the privilege of supporting major upgrades at the Berrien County Jail. During this modernization effort, our team provided comprehensive improvements to the facility’s electrical, communication, fire alarm, and security systems, helping modernize aging infrastructure while supporting continued safety and reliability.
Projects like this demonstrate the long-term value of strong partnerships and dependable work. To return to a facility decades after participating in its expansion — and once again help modernize it for the future — is something we take great pride in.
The Berrien County Jail project represents more than just another completed job. It reflects the continuity, community trust, and enduring relationships that have helped define Mead & White Electric for more than 60 years.
